Carol Louise Gray, born Carol Louise Spence, a woman whose warmth, grace, and vibrant spirit touched all who knew her, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.

Born on February 24, 1937, Carol grew up in Manhattan, New York, where she was raised at Lenox and 2nd Avenue. From an early age, she developed strength, independence, and quiet confidence that would define her life. She later moved to Pennsylvania for work, dedicating over 40 years as a social worker for the State of Pennsylvania, serving within both the welfare and prison systems. Her career reflected her compassion, patience, and unwavering commitment to helping others. She retired in 2013, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Carol’s life changed forever one evening in the mid-1970s when she met the love of her life, John Gray, while out dancing. That chance encounter blossomed into a deep and enduring love. After living in an apartment on Musgrave Street, they purchased their beloved home in West Oak Lane in 1979—a home Carol fondly called her “jump up and down house.” They were married on October 16, 1981, beginning a beautiful 38-year marriage built on friendship, laughter, and devotion. John passed away in 2019, and from that day forward, Carol carried his memory deeply in her heart, missing her best friend every day.

Though Carol had no biological children of her own, she embraced John’s four children wholeheartedly, becoming a loving, steady, and supportive mother figure. Her family grew expansively to include 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply.

Carol also deeply treasured her friendships, which were a constant source of strength and joy throughout her life. She shared especially close and meaningful bonds with Valerie, Earline, Andre, and Paulette. Together, they gave one another unwavering support, laughter, and companionship through every season of life. These friendships were a vital part of who Carol was, and she nurtured them with the same love and loyalty she gave her family.

She found immense joy in traveling and seeing the world, especially anywhere near the water. Carol loved exploring different cultures, foods, and experiences. She spent cherished time in the Bahamas, St. Maarten, Jamaica, Aruba, and Bonaire. The beach was her happy place, where she could relax, reflect, and embrace life’s beauty.

At home, Carol was known for her warmth and hospitality. She loved hosting her infamous basement parties, where laughter, Pinochle games, and great company filled the room. A wonderful cook, she was best known for her ribs and took great joy in preparing meals for others, always cooking from the heart and never without her signature touch, including her fondness for dishes like pig feet and liver.

Carol’s presence was unforgettable. Always stylish and graceful, she had a way of lighting up any room she entered. Her radiant smile and infectious laugh drew people in, while her calm, steady nature kept them grounded. No matter what the situation, Carol remained composed, kind, and measured—never raising her voice or speaking in anger. Her gentle spirit and honesty made her someone people trusted and turned to in both good times and difficult moments.

She is survived by her sister Cynthia Allen; her stepchildren Kim Harris, Kevin Gray, Kirk Gray, and Alisse Stephens; her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; as well as a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.

Carol Louise Gray lived a life defined by love, strength, friendship, and grace. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched and, in the love, she shared so freely.
